What is Boudoir?

boudoir photography

A boudoir (/ˈbd.wɑːr/; French: [bu.dwaʁ]) is a lady‘s private bedroom, sitting room or dressing room. The term derives from the French verb bouder, meaning “to sulk” or boudeur, meaning “sulky”.[1] (wikipedia)

Boudoir is so much more than a simple photo shoot.  It’s also not just a quick photo session to get a few butt naked pictures of yourself (not that anything is wrong with it).  I get booking inquires from women of all ages, professions and sizes.  When they do I always ask the reason why they want to have this session.  If you come to think of it – not every day you pose half naked in front of a gal you haven’t met before 🙂  I have received various responses to my question – some women has battled depression and now back to their normal selves;  some lost a loved one and felt worthless; some felt they were no longer beautiful.  It’s heartbreaking to hear how many women couldn’t remember the last time they felt beautiful – and they were 20 or 50 years old.

I always love when women come to me to celebrate them!  Sometimes it’s their 20-30-40-50th birthday; sometimes it’s the new body; and – the best – when they just want to do something for themselves!

I have not met a woman who has been completely happy with the way she looks.   Whether it’s her stomach (which would look totally perfect to me) or her thighs or her boobs or her arms… Unfortunately, media taught us to be obsessed about our imperfections and if we have curves – we are fat but if we don’t – we are anorectic.  We are made belief that our body limits us and our age defines us and the more we get obsessed about those things the bigger the stress and the struggle.

All that makes my job pretty touch, right?  Maybe.. But honestly, I am lucky as I don’t know most of my clients so I don’t get hung on their believes of imperfections. I look at them and see beautiful women who I can show in their most amazing way.  All glammed up, relaxed and happy in that moment.  So boudoir session is almost like therapy that must be prescribed to each woman at least once in her lifetime.  It will be a reminder to love yourself and see yourself not with all the imperfections that are stuck in your mind but as someone else sees you.
